Effective Instrument Reprocessing for Dental Practices
Instrument reprocessing in dental practices is a complex process that involves multiple steps, protocols, and strict compliance with hygiene standards. These procedures must be continuously reviewed and adapted in accordance with the latest scientific evidence, technological developments, and regulatory requirements.
According to the UNI EN 13060 standard, a medical device can only be considered sterile when the probability of a viable microorganism being present is less than or equal to one in one million. While this threshold represents the accepted standard of sterility, it also highlights an important reality: absolute sterility can never be guaranteed. Achieving this level of safety requires a well-designed and consistently applied reprocessing protocol.
Sterilization alone is not sufficient. It must always be preceded by proper pre-treatment procedures, including pre-disinfection and thorough cleaning of instruments. The pre-disinfection phase plays a crucial role in reducing microbial load and preventing contamination during subsequent steps of the reprocessing workflow. However, in many dental practices this stage is often underestimated or performed incorrectly, which can compromise both staff safety and patient protection.
This course provides a comprehensive and practical overview of the entire instrument reprocessing workflow in dental practices. Through clear explanations supported by images, videos, and clinical examples, participants will gain a deeper understanding of each step involved in the process and how to optimize it according to best practice standards.
Participants will learn how to improve the efficiency and safety of their reprocessing procedures, implement structured protocols, and achieve a level of infection control comparable to hospital-level hygiene standards.
The course also aims to identify common mistakes in disinfection and sterilization procedures, highlight opportunities for improvement, and reinforce a critical message: effective infection prevention relies on rigorous protocols, attention to detail, and a clear understanding that there are no shortcuts to safe and successful instrument reprocessing.
Course Topics
• Instrument handling: from the dental chair to storage
• Importance of pre-disinfection and proper cleaning procedures
• Inspection and maintenance of sterilization devices (sterilizers)
• The concept of traceability and documentation
• Challenges in handpiece reprocessing (manual and automated systems)
• Optimization and organization of the sterilization area
